Enjoy the Physical & Mental Advantages of Gardening

Cultivating your own garden helps you connect with nature in a meaningful and beneficial way. New research links gardening with reduced stress; however, the practice of gardening for the mind and body has been supported for thousands of years. In fact, Florence Nightingale was a strong supporter of gardens and gardening as effective tools for patient physical and psychological recovery. She wrote:

"I shall never forget the rapture of fever patients over a bunch of bright-coloured flowers... people say the effect is only on the mind. It is no such thing. The effect is on the body too."

More recently, the neurologist and author Oliver Sacks observed:

"I cannot say exactly how nature exerts its calming and organizing effects on our brains... I have seen in my patients the restorative and healing powers of nature and gardens, even for those who are deeply disabled neurologically.”

Thank you so much, Laurie, for giving me your expertise through our video calls and helping me decide where in my yard to plant my garden, the vegetables I should grow, the composting, the list of the things I will need and how much of it, and all the details that went into everything to turn a regular yard into food producing land!

As a new gardener, I was overwhelmed from the beginning. I didn’t know where to start and had so many questions.

Laurie helped me figure out a logistical plan from where to build my raised beds, what tools I would need, conditions of the soil and what plants and vegetables that may best suit my family and space.

She gave me tons of advice and helped in so many ways. I never had a green thumb and wasn’t knowledgeable at all in the process of starting a garden and the upkeep necessary for it to flourish. She offered me so many tips and answered my many questions.

I could not have done it without her guidance and encouragement.

Laurie helped me grow an understanding of what my vegetable garden needed in order to be successful and thrive. She helped clarify things like soil drainage issues and tree canopy concerns. It was also helpful to have the opportunity to see photos of Laurie’s garden, so I was able to understand the differences in what can be achieved with better sunlight and garden placement.

Laurie is very knowledgeable about organic gardening and her enthusiasm to share this is contagious!

Hi, I'm Laurie

I created Organic Gardening Made Simple in response to the increasing interest in growing one's own food. As an avid gardener for the past four decades, I have noticed a recent increase in the number of people reaching out to me for advice on starting their own gardens.

Many of those seeking garden advice are concerned about the high cost of food, or the use of chemicals and pesticides in commercial farming. Others want to ensure their family's food security by growing and preserving their own produce.

Through this course, I aim to empower beginners with the knowledge and skills necessary to start and maintain their own organic vegetable garden. While starting a garden may seem daunting, the benefits are immeasurable. These new skills will serve you over a lifetime, and can be passed down to future generations.

Organic Gardening Made Simple offers simple and actionable lessons that are easy to understand and implement. Students will work on 1 module per week over 4 consecutive weeks. Each week students are invited to join my group video call for a live Q&A session to discuss the current module.

I use a variety of resources to make the learning experience enjoyable and easy to follow. Video lessons, downloadable checklists, and other valuable resources that correspond with the course material.

I'm excited to share my knowledge and experience with you and help you create a successful garden this season. Whether you're a complete novice or have some experience, I am here to guide you every step of the way.
